If like me, you take hours, days and sometimes even months to complete a task (I procrastinated on filling out an application form,to access funding for this website, for over 6 months), then hopefully these tops tips will help you to develop your own motivational and successful strategy.
There are many reasons why we procrastinate. Fear and insecurity are often masked in statements like “I’m too lazy” or “I’ll do it later”. By not understanding ourselves, we in turn don’t understand why it is that we do put off the inevitable, and can be incredibly hard on ourselves in the meantime. In my case, why did I delay getting funding for this website which revolutionised my business? Well there it is…. I wasn’t ready for the revolution, I was scared. I knew I would have to design and deliver content, put myself “out there”, and that scared me. So what did I do….what was easier…option B = PROCRASTINATE.
Now the harmful thing was, I didn’t just forget about the form, I saw it on my desk everyday and everyday I felt guilt. Guilt for being lazy, guilt for not putting time and effort into my business, guilt, guilt, guilt. As we all know, feeling guilt is not comfortable, its not motivating and not very inspiring. When I became aware of what was happening I began to tell myself another story, I talked to myself compassionately, I challenged the fears and I realigned with my goal. I have now learned that more often that not, it is FEAR which causes me to procrastinate, its the root cause as such and is the main area I need to work on when I find myself delaying my goals.
