Maybe it was a sharp email fired off too quickly, a tense conversation that escalated before you could stop it, or a moment when frustration or defensiveness took over before reason had a chance to step in.

We’ve all been there. Reactivity is a natural human response, but when we’re caught in it, we often lose sight of what’s really happening beneath the surface.

Why Do We React Instead of Respond?

I spent years asking myself the same question, until one day I realised, after years of reacting with a partner, I am not an angry person, I am a scared person.

When we react impulsively, it’s usually because something deeper has been triggered. an old wound, a fear, a belief about ourselves or others. The brain perceives a threat (even if it’s not a real one), and suddenly we’re in fight-or-flight mode. Our emotions hijack our ability to pause, assess, and choose a response that aligns with who we want to be.

The trouble is, reactive responses often lead to regret, shame, strained relationships, and unnecessary stress. They can erode trust, fuel conflict, and create environments where people walk on eggshells rather than collaborate effectively.
